Good To Know

Jupiter dates to 1947, when António Jacinto Ferreira used the name on tins from his first company. He had been trading fish since age nine and later settled in the Algarve. In 1954 he founded Conserveira do Sul, the cannery that has since relaunched the label.

Conserveira do Sul, a family cannery in Olhão, on Portugal's Algarve coast. The Ferreira family is still involved in the business.

Olhão is a fishing town on the Algarve coast in southern Portugal. It once had dozens of canneries, and Conserveira do Sul is one of the few still working there. Most of its fish comes from Portuguese fish auctions, particularly the one in Olhão, a few minutes from the factory.

Yes. Jupiter's maker says the fish is prepared and packed by hand, using traditional Portuguese methods.

Keep unopened tins in a cool, dry place and check the best-by date. Once opened, move leftovers to a sealed container in the refrigerator and eat them within one to two days.
