Maria Organic

Tuna in EVOO

$10.99

Good To Know

A Portuguese producer working out of Matosinhos, on the coast north of Porto. They pack wild-caught fish with certified organic ingredients, and their packaging is illustrated by Portuguese children's book artists.

The fish itself is wild caught, so it cannot be certified organic. The certification applies to everything else in the tin: the olive oil, tomatoes, chilies, and herbs.

Sardines and small sardines, mackerel fillets, and tuna, in extra virgin olive oil, tomato sauce, and spiced preparations. The range is deliberately narrow rather than covering every species, which is unusual for a Portuguese cannery.

Most Portuguese canneries lean on heritage. Maria Organic goes the other way, with modern design and organic sourcing aimed at people new to the category rather than nostalgic about it.

The small sardines in extra virgin olive oil. It is the plainest preparation in the range, which makes it the clearest read on the fish and the oil they are working with.
